While western civilization believed for thousands of years that unicorns were real, sadly, we know today that they are creatures of legend. Belief in unicorns was especially strong in the mid-18th century, as a symbol of purity, innocence, and power.
The Scots associate the unicorn with dominance and bravery, which may be why the first unicorn appeared on the Scottish royal coat of arms way back in the 12th century.
