A pair of rats can produce nearly half a billion descendants in just three years.
The average lifespan of a rat living in a city is one year. During this time, a male and female rat can produce up to 15,000 descendants. (A descendant means their children and their children’s children and so on.)
The reasons our planet is not Planet Rat (at least, not yet) is due to pest control, food shortages, predators, and disease.
That means that by the time a rat turns one, they would be celebrating 1,250 family birthday parties EVERY MONTH! Woo-hoo!
